Helsingin, Espoon ja Vantaan tutkijatohtoriyhteistyön tuloksia ja tulevaisuuden tutkimussuuntia
Kaupunkiakatemian ja Kaupunkitutkimusinstituutti Urbarian järjestämässä seminaarissa Tiedekulmassa esitellään kaupunkien ja yliopistojen tutkijatohtoriyhteistyön tuloksia ja uusia alkavia tutkimushankkeita. Tarkoituksena on myös keskustella yleisön kanssa tulosten merkityksestä kaupungeille, sekä nostaa esiin kaupungeille keskeisiä näkökohtia tulevien tutkimusaiheiden yhteydessä.
Tutkijatohtorit työskentelevät Helsingin, Espoon ja Vantaan kaupunkien strategisen kaupunkitutkimusyhteistyön rahoituksella, tutkien kaupunkien kanssa yhdessä määriteltyjä teemoja. Tutkimusta on tehty vuorovaikutuksessa kaupunkien asiantuntijoiden kanssa vuosina 2018-2023. Nykyinen rahoituskausi jatkuu vuoden 2025 loppuun.
Tutkijatohtoreiden esitykset ja keskustelut ovat englanniksi.

Programme
We will hear 6 presentations from the postdocs of the city-collaboration. The three postdocs starting the seminar have been working since 2020. They will present the most important results of their research. In the latter part of the seminar, the postdocs who recently started working, will present their research plans and will discuss future trajectories of their research with the audience.

Nilay Kilinç is a social anthropologist who focuses on migration studies. Her research can give cities insights about how they can develop their services for their international highly-skilled residents.

- Anna Zhelnina: Enabling intercultural democracy
Anna Zhelnina is a sociologist researching arenas and tools of civic engagement in urban redevelopment projects in Helsinki. Her research can give cities a better ability to learn and adjust their civic engagement strategies and programs related to land use planning, participatory budgeting or voting. This way cities can make sure that immigrants are included in civic and political life.

- Yu-Shan Tseng: Digital platforms in urban participation
Yu-Shan Tseng is a digital/urban geographer, who explores and compares the possibilities and limits of digital platforms for urban democracy. Her research offers new insights on how digital tools can or cannot be used effectively in participatory urban decision-making.

- Haoxuan Sa: Housing and residential mobility
Haoxuan Sa is researching the issues of immigrants and urban housing diversity in the Helsinki Metropolitan area. She applies both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyse the housing realities, residential perceptions, housing decisions and residential mobility paths of various groups of immigrants in the Helsinki Metropolitan area.

- Basile Finand: Habitat fragmentation and species adaptation
Basile Finand is an evolutionary ecologist researching habitat fragmentation in the Helsinki Metropolitan area and how species adapt to current environmental changes. The aim is to understand how the past configuration of the landscape affects current beetle communities’ composition and life history traits in the urban forests of Helsinki.

- Niharika Singh: AI for sustainable urban development
Niharika Singh is a computer scientist, who specialises in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on Reinforcement Learning. She is working as part of the CousCOUS research group that combines climate-, social- and computer sciences for sustainable urban development.

- Elif Erdoğan Öztekin: Transdisciplinary experimentation on participatory city planning
Elif Erdoğan Öztekin has a background in architecture and design. Her expertise is in the field of design for sustainability transitions. Her research focuses on urban sustainability transformations, and the practices of participatory urban planning in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. She adopts transdisciplinary research principles for multi-stakeholder knowledge co-production, and she utilizes an experimental approach in pursuit of developing working methods for the cities.
