31. Case study of urban renewal/regeneration in industrial areas (brownfield development)

The general planning department of Vantaa is looking for an intern or a thesis worker to study how industrial areas can be transformed into mixed-use areas as well as to investigate both retail areas and commercial spaces and how much of the planned commercial space has been built. The contents of the internship and thesis work will be specified according to the student’s study orientation, skills and interests.
The study area can be either the urban regeneration of an industrial and warehouse area to a mixed-use area of residential and employment use, or the development of the airport area as an attractive employment/business area as the urban structure is diversifying. The study can include for example:
Urban regeneration of an industrial and warehouse area:
• Studying reference cases and visual examples
• Benchmarking the development process of a similar area
• Sketching possible alternatives for the case area
Development of the airport area:
• How to develop the airport city as a mixed-use area but also maintaining and creating attractive and large enough/sufficient sized areas for business development (office, business, commercial etc.)
• The airport’s role as an attraction factor: what kind of business development and employment use it can attract
• The (minimum) size and magnitude (nature) of a business area to create synergy benefits
• The effect of the railway developments (light rail tram, long distance rail connection to airport)
There is an option for master’s thesis about the topic during the internship. The duration of the paid internship is 6 months (possibility for part-time work) and will start 1.6.2023 or by agreement.
